Guan Yu
'The God of War''I am the instrument of justice on the battlefield!' |
Voiced by: Yasunori Masutani (Japanese) Dave B. Mitchell (English) |
Born: 162
Died: 219
Japanese spelling: Kan'u
Age: 30
Height: 6'9 1/2' (205cm)
Guan Yu is a military hero and sworn oath brother of Shu leader Liu Bei and fellow general Zhang Fei. As one of the famed Five Tiger General, Guan Yu is a central figure in the founding and expanding of the Shu kingdom.
Tall and powerful, Guan Yu is a stalwart man who firmly believes in justice and virtue. Normally calm and benign, he stands with an air of noble dignity and has respectful manners. A man who also excels in literary studies, he gains many admirers from each kingdom with his might and has earned the sobriquet 'God of War'.
- Ambiguously Red: He has very red accented skin, especially in later games.
- Badass - Even as a ghost he was badass enough to kill people.
- Badass Beard - True to form, considering he's also called 'Lord of the Magnificent Beard', this is only natural. One look at his beard was enough to cause some to surrender. Cao Cao admired it so much he had a bag made to protect it while Guan Yu was serving Wei.
- Badass Family - The patriarch of the Guan Family, with extended members including adoptive sons Guan Ping and Guan Suo, and daughter-in-law Bao Sanniang.
- Blade on a Stick - The ORIGINALguan dao user (said weapon is named after him)..aptly named..
- I Call It Blue Dragon, although..
- Green Is Blue - Transliteration issues abound with the name of his weapon, most often referred to as Blue Dragon but save for a few bits of dialogue is Green Dragon as of DW7. The original Chinese name, and by extension the Japanese name, can be translated either way and uses of the weapon's name typically lack context to distinguish which is the correct localization.
- I Call It Blue Dragon, although..
- Cool Horse - He'll usually be the one mounting the Red Hare in any stage that takes place after the final defeat of Lu Bu. Justified, as Cao Cao gave the stallion to him when he temporarily allied with Wei.
- Crispin Freeman - DW5
- Feel No Pain - A famous story about Guan Yu has him casually playing chess while a doctor preforms surgery on his arm that was infected from a poison arrow. He refused to be put to sleep for fear the enemy could attack. Others in the room apparently gagged and wept at the sound of the knife scraping the bone, but Guan Yu continued to play, laugh, and talk like nothing was happening.
- Freudian Trio - With Liu Bei and Zhang Fei. Superego, the (mostly) stoic giant in contrast with Zhang Fei's Boisterous Bruiser.
- Good Parents: Is very proud and protective of his kids.
- Historical Hero Upgrade: Oddly averted as time has gone by. In fact, the games have increasingly reflected the historical reality that he was a good warrior, but a so-so general at best.
- Justice Will Prevail - While not as much as Ma Chao, starting from 6, Guan Yu has been focusing more on the word 'justice'.
- Lightning Bruiser - In DW7XL, his EX weapon is Speed Type, and Guan Yu still hits as hard as if he's Heavy Type, as he's fast and can use dodges.
- Mighty Glacier - Always slow without a horse, but has excellent Mook butchering ability with Green Dragon.
- Oh Crap - How the everyone reacted when he killed Hua Xiong at Shi Shui Gate and when he killed Yan Liang and Wen Chou in one stroke they were the strongest warriors after Lu Bu.
- Worthy Opponent - To a large number of warriors
Zhang Fei
'The Unequaled Courage''It looks like it's time for me to crack some skulls!' |
Voiced by: Hirohiko Kakegawa (Japanese) Steve Kramer (English) |
Born: (Unknown)
Died: 221
Japanese spelling: Chouhi
Age: 27
Height: 6'3' (190cm)
The sworn oath brother of Liu Bei and Guan Yu, and one of the Five Tiger Generals of Shu. He is known to be very protective of his beloved daughter Xing Cai.
Zhang Fei is a loud and brash man who thrives in a brawl and loves his wine. Stubborn and prideful, he never wants to turn his back on the enemy and is easily motivated into anger. He displays a wider range of emotions than his brothers as he's known to be cheerful one moment and deeply sadden in the next. Though his judgment may be questionable, his heart is in the right place and he usually knows when to be practical.
- The Alcoholic - Often the cause of his problems.
- Badass - Scares away an army by shouting. There are also some accounts of Guan Yu acknowledging him as being stronger than the former in terms of combat ability.
- Blade on a Stick - A unique 'viper' spear, which is an accurate portrayal of the weapon used in the novel.
- Double Weapon - DW6-7, with the same head and all.
- Blood Knight - Always happy in a scrap.
- Bob Papenbrook - DW4-5, playing the same character in Dynasty Tactics and Kessen II when almost every other character has changed voice actors multiple times since then. He was the perfect Zhang Fei, but unfortunately passed away in 2006.
- Boisterous Bruiser - Following suit with his original novel appearance, he can cow whole armies with but a single shout.
- Freudian Trio - With Liu Bei and Guan Yu. Zhang Fei was obviously the Id.
- Gonk: Borderline example, looking rather bestial by DW8. This is quite odd considering he was regarded as attractive in the source canon.
- Hot-Blooded - Easily the most hotheaded of the oath brothers.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold - He can be very..problematic, but his heart is always in the right place.
- Large Ham - Even by the standards of this series, Zhang Fei is top tier in hamminess.
- Overprotective Dad - Although he's more concerned about Xing Cai getting hurt in battle than anyone trying any funny business.
- Why would he be worried about that? Xing Cai isn't exactly 'funny business' bait.
- Super Strength - Said to have the strength of 10,000 men. Might be a slight exaggeration.
- What the Hell, Hero? - Blames Zhuge Liang for Guan Yu's death in DW6, given it was under his advice to patrol Jing Province. He then admits that it was beyond HIS control; it was just his Lack of Empathy that was angering him.
- You Shall Not Pass - The bridge at Chang Ban
Zhao Yun
'The Dragon of Chang Shan''I challenge any and all comers to test me in the art of battle!' |
Voiced by: Masaya Onosaka (Japanese), Terrence Stone (English) |
Born: (Unknown)
Died: 229
Japanese spelling: Chou'un
Age: 24
Height: 6'1' (185cm)
Zhao Yun is a Shu general and one of the Five Tiger Generals. Zhao served Shu on many battles, with the Battle of Changban probably being the most famous. It was said that Zhao Yun went to save Liu Bei's infant son, Liu Shan, and he had to fight through thousands of Wei soldiers singlehandedly all the way back to Shu's camp.
Zhao Yun is usually one of Liu Bei's right-hand men, faithfully serving him for the good of the land as a calm yet valiant general. He is always courageous and heroic, facing impossible odds in stride.
- The Ace - Almost to the point of being a Gary Stu in the source material.
- Badass - Oh, so very. Consider the opening movies for the games: in DW5, he singlehandedly destroys an entire Wei army just to get to Cao Pi, 6 and Strikeforce's opening pits him toe-to-toe against Lu Bu, considered the strongest person in the series, while for DW7, he manages to kick a horse in the face that topples and destroys an advancing guard.
- Blade on a Stick - One of the few characters with an unchanging main weapon.
- Cool Old Guy: In his later years.
- Everything's Better with Spinning - Not the most egregious example, but he's pretty spin-happy with his spear until DW6, which gives him more a more acrobatic moveset.
- Ho Yay - With Ma Chao and Liu Bei
- Jack of All Stats - One of the easiest characters to pick up and play for novices and veterans alike, though he is not a Game Breaker.
- Justice Will Prevail - JustLikeMaChao!!
- Mascot - Unofficially, he's the one for the Dynasty Warriors franchise, having been on the front cover of most of the main installments.
- Cover Stealing Squad - Technically, he's also KOEI's poster boy, as it's rare there's a cover for any Dynasty Warriors game without his handsome face on it.
- One-Man Army - As per the source material, some of the games let you play as him running into, and out of, the middle of Wei's army at the Battle of Chang Ban alone to save Liu Shan and killing plenty of mooks and several officers in the process. Also carries into his ingame abilities. In 2, he's the crowd-clearer. In other titles, he usually gets the safest crowd-clearing moves, and easily one of the best crowd-clearers when upgraded.
- Notched Up to Eleven in DW5's opening movie, where he cuts up about a million Mooks before going toe-to-toe with Cao Pi.
- Playing Against Type - Just like Zhuge Liang, Masaya Onosaka as Zhao Yun discards comic relief in place of being taken very seriously.
- Scarf of Asskicking - A very nice looking one in DW7
- Screams Like a Little Girl - In DW6, he sounds distinctively unmanly when calling for help. 'Somebody! I am in need of assistance!'
- Undying Loyalty - To Shu, more specifically, Liu Bei.
Ma Chao
'The Splendid Spear'Voiced by: Kouji Haramaki (Japanese), David Berón (English) |
Born: 176
Died: 222
Japanese spelling: Bachou
Age: 21
Height: 6'1 1/4' (186cm)
Son of Xi leader Ma Teng and cousin of fellow Shu officer Ma Dai. After the assassination of his father, Ma Chao believed that the leader of Shu, Liu Bei, was behind the crime. So he marched to Cheng Du in order to kill Liu Bei. He learns however that it was really Cao Cao who was behind the murder of his father. Ma Chao then joins with Shu because he believes that Liu Bei is on the side of justice and becomes one of the Five Tiger Generals.
Filled with a warrior's pride, Ma Chao is a straightforward man who believes in making his future with his own power. A firm believer of justice and heroics, he is always intent on declaring his intentions for all to hear.
- Animal Motifs - Aside from being associated with stallions, his armor is always adorned with dragon motifs.
- Automaton Horse - In DW4 and 5, your horse likely won't be getting any breaks with Ma Chao in the saddle, especially if he mounts Shadow Runner.
- Badass - It's oft forgotten how he was one of the most badass characters in the novels, a brilliant general and nigh unstoppable fighter. Hell, even Cao Cao was terrified of him.
- Blade on a Stick - All appearances except DW6: Special and 6: Empires, where he uses a..
- Bling of War - This applies to every character, but Ma Chao stands out for wearing a full suit of gilt (solid gold) plate armor in most of his appearances. This is true to the novel, where he was known as 'Ma Chao the Splendid' for his skill and very nifty armor.
- He actually lampshades this for one of his Conquest Mode dialogues in DW7.
- Hair of Gold - A rare heroic male blond.
- Flanderization - JUSTICE!
- Game Breaker - Pre-DW6, equipping him with the Shadow harness makes him Nigh Invulnerable due to him attacking only on the right side, allowing him to infinitely juggle the officer.
- Possibly in reference to this, his stratagem in Next is called 'Splendid Cavalry' and causes mounted damage to 'increase considerably' for the next battle.
- Ho Yay - With Zhao Yun.
- JUSTICEWill Prevail
- Rated 'M' for Manly - While he could qualify as a Bishounen, his more manly qualities define his character.
- Roaring Rampage of Revenge - At Tong Gate, he is determined to avenge his father. Cao Cao actually ran away in fear when he appeared.
- Which leads to an ironicMoral Myopia. Cao Cao must die for killing his father, but when Wang Yi says the same about him killing her whole family, Ma Chao tries to survive and doesn't quite apologize.
- Sobriquet - 'Demon of Xiliang'. Granted, it's just Wang Yi referring him as such due to him butchering her family.
- Tony Oliver - DW4

Born: (Unknown)

Japanese spelling: Kouchuu
Age: 62

Huang Zhong is an old soldier who gained his fame during his later parts of life. He is a fellow comrade of Wei Yan as both of them served Han Xuan. He fights Guan Yu and each man is greatly impressed by the other. Thinking he would betray him, Han Xuan attempts to execute Huang Zhong, but is stopped and killed by Wei Yan. They later join Shu together.
A master of archery, he is admired greatly by the other Shu officers. He always wants to prove that, despite his age, he is still a very capable officer and combatant.
- Badass Grandpa - Over 60 and still kicking ass.
- Bow and Sword in Accord - In DW4 and 5, along with Xiahou Yuan, he has non-FPS bow usage when he switches which weapon is residing in Hammerspace.
- Cool Old Guy: Tends to be pretty upbeat and complimentary to his allies and generally acts like Shu's resident grandpa figure.
- Death Seeker: Wants to die on the field of battle.
- Old Soldier - DUH!!
- Rain of Arrows - His Tome Special in DW6
- The Rival - Xiahou Yuan, who is also a bow specialist.
Chapter 508: The Five Tiger Generals! Bachicheng!
Translated by: Hypersheep325
Edited by: Michyrr
These places are all of high elevation, and given the abilities of the Tibetans, they're definitely occupying the summit. This offers them a high vantage point with which to spot the enemy and also facilitates their charges. Charging down the mountain will allow the Tibetan highland steeds to reach their maximum speed as quickly as possible, truly making them difficult to defeat! As for those at the base of the mountain, both infantry and cavalry will find it hard to gain speed, making their opponents even more difficult to deal with.
Wang Chong's mind was restless, his brow slightly furrowing in thought.
'Do you know who's leading these soldiers that Huoshu Huicang left behind?' Wang Chong suddenly asked.
'Bachicheng!' a tanned vice-commandant immediately offered. He was responsible for the scouts, so he clearly understood the situation.
'This person is one of Huoshu Huicang's Five Tiger Generals. In terms of strength, he's probably much stronger than the deceased Batunlu! Moreover, unlike Batunlu, he's an excellent commander, and he's incredibly skilled at breaking through defenses. He's both brave and wise! When General Li remained to hold the enemy back by offering himself as bait, he formed his soldiers into one of the most powerful defensive formations, the Golden Fortress Formation, to tightly surround him. But that Bachicheng still successfully led his soldiers in breaking through the defense and shattering the Golden Fortress Formation!'
'General Li was famous for his Golden Fortress Formation,' an officer added. 'Using that formation, he was able to defend against many foes in Anxi and Beiting. But I didn't think that it would be broken by the Tibetans on this journey south!'
At the mention of the deceased Li Zhengyi, everyone felt a great sorrow.
Wang Chong was also slightly moved by this recount. He had heard of Li Zhengyi's Golden Fortress Formation. Apparently, Li Zhengyi had come up with the formation himself, and even Hu Great Generals like Gao Xianzhi and Fumeng Lingcha had praised it for its toughness. One could just imagine how formidable Li Zhengyi's Golden Fortress Formation must have been to earn the praise of these Imperial Great Generals.
And for the Tibetans to break through the Golden Fortress Formation that not even the Turks or the Arabs could break through was a testament to Bachicheng's strength.
It looks to me that this person has incredible offensive capabilities. He must at least have an offensive war halo that can cover his entire army! Wang Chong quietly said to himself.
Although Li Zhengyi had lost, failing to fulfill the imperial decree, he had expressed his sincerity through his death. At a time like this, Wang Chong naturally wouldn't continue to criticize him, and he certainly wouldn't use the occasion to doubt his ability.
'My apologies; I've made Milord see an unsightly scene,' Xu Shiping finally said after a few moments. Both he and his fellow officers had regained their composure.
Wang Chong waved his hand and calmly said, 'Milord is too polite. I only have respect for General Li.'
Xu Shiping nodded.
'Milord, we currently have a severe lack of manpower, and Bachicheng is a powerful opponent. Moving south at this time truly isn't a wise move. Your subordinate means that we should prioritize getting in touch with the other troops and wait for reinforcements from the Imperial Court before considering moving south. Although the 60,000 soldiers of the reinforcement army suffered heavy casualties, quite a few of my brothers managed to survive. Other than our group, we also have people here, here, and here. If we can get in touch with them, we'll at least be able to protect ourselves.' Xu Shiping's finger drew an arc across the model as he pointed out several locations.
'If we can get in touch with these areas, we would be able to gather almost 20,000 soldiers, which would be of great help to Young Master's plans.'
Wang Chong subconsciously turned his gaze to those places. Slowly, his brow began to crease.
Tibetans occupied the areas between all these places, and they were all very far from each other. The farthest was perhaps almost one thousand li away. It would take an extremely long time to gather all these people, but Wang Chong had only three days before Lion City fell, and he had to get there as quickly as possible.
'Milord, honing the edge won't delay us from cutting firewood and to act with great haste does not always mean more speed. Your subordinate means that there's no harm in waiting a few more days to gather more soldiers and then make a decision…' Xu Shiping began to probe.
'No!'
Before Xu Shiping could finish, Wang Chong frowned and immediately rejected Xu Shiping's plan.
'We cannot delay the move south. It has to be immediately carried out!'
These words were absolute and brooked no questions.
The Five Tiger Generals
Xu Shiping and his officers were left stunned. Wang Chong had always given the impression of a genial and approachable person. None of them had expected him to make decisions with such resolve.
Xu Shiping brought his head very low and deferentially said, 'We will naturally obey Milord's orders.'
Wang Chong was a descendant of a prestigious clan of ministers and generals, and he had already proved himself by defeating their great foe Batunlu. He also had King Song's token in hand and was this army's highest commander. Xu Shiping naturally wouldn't object to Wang Chong's orders at this time.
'The only reason Ü-Tsang and Mengshe Zhao haven't begun a large-scale mobilization to the north is that Lion City is holding them down. If we don't think of a way to deal with those roadblocks as quickly as possible and get down to the Erhai plains, then once Lion City falls, it won't just be Tibetan cavalry waiting for us at the passes. Right now, it's not a question of if we should take this sort of risk. We don't have a choice. We have to break through!' Wang Chong's eyes shone as he explained.
'But what do we do about Bachicheng?' a commandant said. 'This man is powerful and skilled in strategy, and has the geographic advantage of the passes. We alone won't be any match for him.'
'Hmph! Leave that to me!'
Wang Chong snorted, utterly unconcerned.
Bachicheng truly was a formidable character, but skilled in strategy? Hah, there was no one in this generation who could compare to Wang Chong in strategy. Even the Great Tang War God Su Zhengchen had lost to him. His battle against Batunlu had already proved his ability to break through more than one thousand Tibetans, and it was now time for him to prove his skills in strategy!
Shu Generals
Leading cavalry wasn't his only specialty in war.
'Inform the army to prepare to move out. You're all dismissed!' Wang Chong ordered with a wave of his hand.
Spela gratis roulette. ……
Rumble!
Five Tiger Generals Of Shu
The sound of horses galloping across the earth echoed through the mountains, along with the sounds of high-pitched neighing and the clattering of metal.
On the summit of this high peak was a man fully clad in armor, even his face covered in a mask. Only his icy eyes were exposed to the furious gales, their gaze looking down upon the world, sweeping to and fro across the earth. Under this general's feet glimmered a massive Halo of Thorns, making this general seem like a god.
Even the most fearsome of his Tibetan subordinates kept a distance of several zhang from him. None of them dared to get too close, and kept their heads slightly lowered and timid expressions on their faces.
'What have you discovered?'
Bachicheng stood erect on his horse, his droning voice devoid of emotion.
Waves of heat spread out from his body, making those nearby feel like they were on fire.
'Reporting to Milord, there is no news for the moment. We have already defeated the Tang army, and Longxi's Geshu Han is being held down by the King of Generals. The Great Tang has no troops that they can use at the moment. All we need to do is wait for the Great Minister and General to destroy Lion City and all of the southwest will be in our Ü-Tsang's range.'
Though the reporting Tibetan commander spoke respectfully, he kept his distance behind Bachicheng.
Bachicheng had an explosive temper and was prone to inflicting corporal punishment on his subordinates. Moreover, he cultivated a fire technique, which further stoked his anger and made him easier to provoke. Although this man was a commander in the army, he did not dare to contend against one of the Five Tiger Generals.
Creee!
A shrill cry came from within the clouds, then a green gyrfalcon flew out of them.
'Something's happened!'
All the commanders on the mountaintop appeared surprised at the sight of this gyrfalcon. Meanwhile, Bachicheng raised his brows, his eyes spewing out cold light.
He had never feared war. On the contrary, he desired it.
Five Tiger Generals Of Tvb
'Someone, quickly go and see what's going on!' a Tibetan military officer ordered one of the nearby elite scouts.
'There's no need. Let them come!'
Bachicheng waved his hand, a look of contempt in his eyes.
Rumble!
It took only a few moments for black tides of steel to quickly come into view, leaving behind clouds of dust as they approached the pass. The black Great Tang war banners waving in the tide indicated who they were.
'It really is the Great Tang reinforcements. Interesting!'
Bachicheng watched the approaching Tang army, his eyes shining with a cruel light.
'Milord, it looks like the remnants of those evil creatures. I didn't think that they would dare approach!'
Behind him, several officers offered their opinions.
'I'd like to see what they plan to do,' another officer sneered.
At the start, they had believed that the Great Tang had dispatched a new reinforcement army. If that really was the case, then the forces that they had with them truly might be insufficient. But if it was just the remnants of that defeated army, the situation was completely different. They had fought a battle with them not too long ago, so these Tibetans were extremely familiar with their war banners and armor!
As the Tibetans silently waited for Tang army to approach, that cloud of dust stopped thirty to forty li from the mountains.
'What are those fellows up to?'
At the summit, the officers frowned, and even Bachicheng appeared confused. Fat cat software reviews.
But before the Tibetans could react, a chorus of neighs came from the distance, and the earth shook once more. The dense ranks of the Tang army were turning around and heading back into the distance.
'Hmph, these craven cowards actually want to run!'
'Haha, I truly did overestimate them. It looks to me that they didn't even think that we would be guarding here.'
……
The Tibetan officers suddenly noticed something.
'Hmph, a mix of infantry and cavalry! Do they think they can still run with this kind of army?'
Bachicheng grimly laughed, and with a swish and a burst of sparks, he pulled out the scimitar at his waist, letting its cold edge gleam in the void.
'Since they've come over, let's go and greet them! All soldiers, hear my order! Blow the horns! Immediately move out and kill them for me!'
Bachicheng's eyes glowed with savagery and cruelty.
